Summer Update From Your President #NAEOPconf17 @caeop @naeop @NAEOP_SW_Area

Hello CAEOP Family:

Ten of our CAEOP members made the trek to Greenville, South Carolina to attend the NAEOP Conference.  What a wonderful experience it was.  If you have not had the opportunity to attend a National conference, making it a priority would be an excellent idea!

Our Keynote speaker was Sam Glenn.  What a story!  You can follow him on Facebook to read about his life journey and enjoy the motivational sessions he hosts live in that medium.  His sense of humor had us all laughing nonstop for his entire 90 minute presentation.  He is also an artist and used artist chalk to draw a picture while he told us the meaning behind it.  It was so inspiring.  Several of us are still talking about it.

The other briefings were amazing and relevant to our current working situations.  We learned self-defense (actual hands-on) and how to be better leaders from many professionals in our field.  The awards ceremony was beautiful.  So many classified employees receiving their PSP and CEOE.  Set your goal now to get your certification for next year.  Lisa Morehouse from Nebraska was installed as the President of NAEOP.  Her theme is "Accept the Challenge - Make the Difference."  I have asked both Lisa and Wendy Heslink to return to our CAEOP conference in Santa Maria - both have agreed to come and speak to us and assist with workshops and breakouts.  I am thrilled; to say the least.

We were also able to absorb the culture of South Carolina, enjoy great food, as well as finding the 9 mice hidden on Main Street.  There is a children's book that was written about 9 mice and their desire to leave their safe cage at home for a great adventure.  Through that story little mice were designed and made out of cast iron, then "hidden" throughout the downtown area.  It was an adventure for all of us not to mention great fun.  We are proud to say that we found all 9!

We had two first-timers in our group:  Beth Heyden and Sarah Tierce.  It was awesome to see them enjoy their first ever National conference.  I know I can speak for them, that they are now ready to head to Minnesota for next years' conference already.

Teresa Himmelberger (Utah) was installed as the Southwest Area Director.  You may remember her, as she along with Wendy, attended our conference in Arrowhead this past March.  Theresa announced the winner of the southwest logo contest; which was our very own Beth Heyden.  Beth was also appointed as the website and social media chairman for the southwest.  A southwest area Professional Development weekend is in the planning stages.  Details will be provided once they are confirmed.

It is hard to believe that I am already halfway through my term as your President.  As always, it is my goal to represent CAEOP to the best of my ability and to do all I can to grow our organization both in membership and through professional development.  Don't forget to mark your calendars for our 68th Annual Conference, March 8-10 in Santa Maria, California.

Cheers to all of you and remember "Stay the Course."

Lori Ortell, CEOE

President 2017-2018
